Spring has officially arrived, and signs of renewal are popping up everywhere. This is the time of year when people have had enough recharging and are ready to move forward, and this month’s articles fall under that umbrella. To get your spring off to a good start, we offer some insight on the latest trends in medical imaging as well as patient—and radiologist—care.
Our cover feature considers the evergreen topic of image sharing. The benefits and drawbacks of PACS vs vendor-neutral archives vs deconstructed PACS have been fervently debated in recent years, and the answer to what’s best for your organization is … it depends. Beth W. Orenstein speaks with some of the experts about the latest trends and what to consider when you’re contemplating a replacement for your legacy PACS.
On the topic of renewal, Kathy Hardy reports on the use of TARE-Y90 for pediatric liver cancers. The treatment has been used successfully in adult patients, but an interventional radiologist at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, decided to try treating children with it, and the results are highly promising.
To find out what’s new in DR, Keith Loria surveys several manufacturers to learn what they’re up to. Today’s DR is more versatile than ever, and clinicians are finding ever more ways to incorporate it into patient care and reinvent the oldest radiological modality.
Another trend that has been prominent over the past few years, albeit one that people would like to reverse, is burnout among radiologists. Increasing imaging volumes and demands on radiologists’ time have pushed many to consider whether they should look for another line of work. Jeannette Sabatini catches up with some researchers who have studied the problem in depth, and they agree that some new ideas are in order.
